YouTube HQ and HD video in WordPress

13 12 2008

You can now embedd HQ and HD video in WordPress by extending the attributes of the URL, WordPress also allows you to specify the width and height of the player.

Above is a HD video and the wordpress syntax used was

youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPqcBitvscY&w=480&h=295&fmt=22

Note that the height should be set to 295 and not 270, as the YouTube control and progress bar is 25px high.

YouTube video in HD quality

12 12 2008

With my video Week 48 – 2008 I started to upload the “News Week Video series” in HD quality.

YouTube has presently 3 level of image and sound quality:

normal quality
high quality (HQ)
HD quality (HD)

First of all the quality level depends on the file size, but to achieve a HD level your file format must be at least 1280 x 720 px for uplaod. Since News Week 48 I upload in this size, and the file size produced by Final Cut of this 2:09 minute long video is about 80mB.

Watching in High Quality or HD quality is another matter. You can set your YouTube viewer to allways watch in High Quality, and if the quality level is available at source it will play in HQ. But to view in HD, you must force the window, it does not start automatically in HD (yet).

So you will most likely see one of these selections at the right under the video:

hd7202

In a URL link, or through direct browser input, you can force YouTube to play the video in HQ or HD, if its available. For HQ, you add &fmt=18, and for HD you add &fmt=22 to the URL.

They should then look like this:

hd7203

As you can see on the following screenshot, the quality between “normal” and “HD” is enormous:

hd720p

Good luck.

Donald Crowhurst

11 11 2007

Watch this video of my friend Graham talking about Donald Crowhurst

YouTube Direkt
Donald Crowhurst (1932–1969) was an English businessman and amateur sailor who died while competing in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, a single-handed, round-the-world yacht race. Crowhurst had entered the race in hopes of winning a cash prize from the Sunday Times to aid his failing business. Instead, he encountered difficulty early in the voyage, and secretly abandoned the race while reporting false positions, in an attempt to appear to complete a circumnavigation without actually circling the world. Evidence found after his disappearance indicates that this attempt ended in insanity and suicide.

Anime 3: Die Hypnose von Joe Pinio

16 07 2007

In this 3rd anime, new techniques were used, and I could take my ambitions a step further.

The plot:

Joe watches Astromant, as he tries to hypnose him with a pendulum. However, Joe gets caught by the red steel ball, and falls to the ground. Then a further accident happens: the cord of the pendulum breaks, and the steel ball falls on Joe and craches him.

Production notes:

Anime Studio Pro: use of ball motion, starting slowly, accelerating and reducing speed again. Synchronisation of Joes position with the interpolated red ball.

Anime 2: Joe Pinio im Buchladen

16 07 2007

After positive responses to the first Bleiglass Anime, I started to explore and use more of the functionalities of Anime Studio Pro, see the production notes below.

The most amazing insights however came from reading this book I bought:

Animation

Wau! what a wealth of informations. After having been glued to teh first 60 pages, I went on to build “Joe Pinio im Buchladen”

The plot:

Joe stands in a bookshop, throws his speaking trumpet away, moves a step forward, plus on a cord, and the OPINIO book drops from the ceiling.

Production notes:

Anime Studio Pro: use of separate layers for legs and speaking trumpet

Photoshop: background and advertisement for the OPINIO book (amazon and libri)

iMovie HD: intro + clip + advert

Garageband: music track and sound effects

Duration: 16 sec.

Anime 1: Joe Pinio lebt

16 07 2007

My first steps into the world of animation

Having bought the software Anime Studio Pro from e frontier, I could not resist to quickly build my first animation. Having done not much more then browse through the basic tutorial section, the result is of course: simple and rough. Here the result:

This short Bleiglass Anime includes some movement and sound, and all 4 software I will be using in future projects have been active. The software used are:

4 Software

Production notes:

Anime Studio Pro: the small orange character was build as vector, his name is Joe Pinio, and he is a mascot of a German blog OPINIO, run by a local newspaper, the Rheinische Post. Joe Pinio was boned to allow basic movement.

Photoshop: the background picture was produced from a photo.

iMovie HD: this Apple software was used to connect the Anime clip and the closing credit, to which a effect was added to make it look like a old film projection.

Garageband: this Apple software was used to add voice and a loop, kid (laughing)
